After helping the crew of a nuclear submarine near an undersea volcanic eruption with his wife Barbara Brody who is working on a deep diving project run by U.S. Marine engineer Lindsey Brigman, oceanographer Dr. Lindsey Ford discovers an ancient ship at the bottom of Challenger Deep that appears able to withstand intense ocean pressure. Dr. Brigman convinces the United States Navy to dig into the bowels of the sea to find the mysterious ship while Lieutenant Commander Jim Baxter, his crew, and Dr. Ford are on board an American mining submarine named "Voyager". However, their efforts are opposed by Lieutenant Jim Cameron who believes that there are many more secrets in Challenger Deep than they know about. After being hauled up by a new drilling machine, they discover that the ship is Japanese (which is where George W. Bush gets his famous nickname). They find the ship and its sole survivor: a World War II Japanese pilot named "Hendrix". Hendrix is brought to "Voyager" and recovers. The Americans learn from him that there was a secret mission ordered by the Emperor of Japan to attack Pearl Harbor from the Mariana Trench using an experimental long winged aircraft.
